a shooting near facebook headquarters injures a mother and her young child. good evening i'm ken wayne. >> i'm jana katsuyama in tonight for heather holmes. >> we begin with developing news, covering two shootings on the peninsula that happened within a few miles of each other. the first shooting involved a mother and her child, but we begin in east palo alto where ktvu's jade hernandez has late- breaking details about the shooting there. >> reporter: investigators will have to determine if the first shooting in menlo park a few hours ago is tied to the recent shooting in east palo alto. you can see police officers are capital blocked off here. the most disturbing part is a young child was shot in the first shooting and police are investigating whether these are gang-related. we saw a woman, we believe it was the injured woman from the first shooting get into a police car. she and her 2-year-old son were taken to the hospital, where they remain tonight. she was setting in the back of car in menlo park. a bullet pierced the window and grazed the toddler silting on the mother's lap in the bac

news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. i am ken wayne. frank somerville is off. >> i am julie haener. thieves are targeting gift cards. even though police are aware of it you could have had a card that was tampered with. ktvu's matt keller is live to show us how they are getting away with your money. >> reporter: this safeway here is one of two where the gift cards were found. and deputies say there may be people out there who may not realize they are victims. >> reporter: a small town in the mountains but big time thieves were hoping to profit. sheriff's deputies said workers at this safeway reported someone tampered with gift cards. >> this is a very smart scam. i looked that cards and it was hard to determine. >> reporter: look at this gift card. looks like one you would find in your store. if you look, you can see the bar barcode is not what it seems. >> they photo copy it and place it on the other cards by slipping paper in there and you would never know till you got home. >> the scam puts the money on the thieve's gift cards instead of yours. they found dozens. although no one
'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. >>> in the east bay, a shooting at the bayfair b.a.r.t. station has left one person dead and another one injured. alley rasmus there and she's talked to witnesses and how this affecting service. >> reporter: the station is closed. it's been closed since 1:00. we've seen train after train pass through the station without stopping. there's crime scene tape on the b.a.r.t. platform and there's tape blocking just about every entrance on the ground level. this is all because of a fatal shooting that happened around 12:30 this afternoon. it happened in the bus zone. that parked ac transit bus you are looking at, five seats next to it is where the victim of the fatal shooting was found. a 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. a woman was injured. she went to the hospital. her life injuries -- her injuries are not life- threatening. witnesses, including several people at a nearby taxi stand, told us they heard several shots fired, then saw a crowd of people at the bus stop disperse. >> shots. like two slowly and the others more quickly, like boom, boom
: this afternoon, ken wayne caught up with bill bratton. >> a lot of our work is going to be very significantly focused within the department, looking at how they're fighting crime, how they might improve how they fight crime. >> reporter: bratton is known for a more aggressive policing style which includes stop and frisk. the chp has been using that method for decades. >> when we stop, we always have probable cause. sometimes it's based on a vehicle code violation. sometimes it's based upon things that occur within the view of the officer. >> reporter: in the past two and a half months, the chp stopped about 2,000 vehicles here. they impounded 659 vehicles and arrested 307 people. officers also recovered 80 stolen vehicles and took 13 guns off the streets, including this assault weapon with a loaded 30-round magazine. >> it is safe to say that the violator most likely had less than honorable intentions with that weapon. >> reporter: opponents of bratton are still crying foul. >> i think that the council, you know, went for the quick fix over the sustainable solution. >> reporter: larry reed to

am broiled in a controversial murder case. good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. a routine court hearing erupted into a fight between two families in san jose today. one man's family wants justice for a dead father and the other is calling for leniency for the man who shot him. >> reporter: the hearing lasted about a minute while outside was the real drama where supporters from both sides got into a fight. family and friends of 26-year- old ricardo hernandez streamed out of the santa clara county courthouse this afternoon after showing up to support the second degree murder suspect. they were taunted by the family of 36-year-old christopher soriano, the man killed december 31st in san jose in what police describe was a citizens arrest gone wrong. >> i'm a widow with five kids now. >> hey, hey! [ yelling ] >> reporter: soriano's family told us they're upset hernandez is portrayed as a hero seen here in a previous court appearance. police say hernandez was called to the summer breeze apartment complex by his maintenance supervisor after soriano was spotted on the
